Are You Afraid To Tell People What You Do?

Dear Architect,

Are you sure that people know what you do from your logo and/or company name?  Or is it just a slick logo/name and you believe that people should know?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but most people won’t know if you are not really clear about it…don’t be afraid to spell the beans for them.  Here’s a good example of how some businesses are just wasting their hard earn money money on some slick logo for absolutely nothing…just to ‘Look Cool’ or something of that sort…

If you don’t tell people what you are about, why should they now? Really

I went to the gym last night and decided to park in a different parking lot.  I noticed a few signs on the wall of one of the building and thought it was funny how those signs didn’t do much (read here- Nothing).  Out of 3, there is only 1 that you can guess what they do…I’ll let you decide which one.  Here the picture:

So I decided to Google those 3 companies once I got home. Obviously Int,L Teriyaki is a teriyaki restaurant. That one was easy since what else can it be.

Then there’s the top sign; SPEX.  What would you guess? Well, I’m still not sure what kind of business it is even after reading the information online. There are comments about haircuts and also about the ‘inappropriate’ Dr. Campbell giving bad advices to women…I guess it is some sort of business that specialize on your head…The sign sure doesn’t say what it is.

And then there is the The Industry, don’t worry about the small text since it just say Seattle, WA.  Well, it’s obvious don’t you think? It’s a men’s only store with top quality designs clothes.  I park there on a regular basis and never knew there’s a store for me right there!

If only their sign would have said…something about it!!!

Back to you;

if your Logo and/or company name is not enough for people to exactly know what you do, well…you need to tell them what it is.  Don’t be afraid to use a bit of text to tell people (I know, how criminal).  You can be sure that your potential prospects will be happy to know or be reminded of what it is you do.  Even better, you will get more business this way.

If you have a ‘slick’ business card that doesn’t say much, it’s time for you to go online and make a new one that really inform people about your business.

One more thing, the back of you business card is a great place to put a testimonial.  Don’t leave it blank because some graphic designer told you it’s better this way.  I’m telling you, it’s wasted space AND money!
